Go, See, Do
The Paradox Valley and its surrounding area have an abundance of recreational choices for your enjoyment. It is an ideal base for a varied array of activities. A map is available as a guide to the places mentioned.
-
Hiking
Foremost and easiest among the activities is hiking. You can literally step off your veranda and head in any direction for high desert exploration and viewing. There are some jeep trails to follow, or you may simply want to take off on your own path.
The red sandstone cliffs to the north are about a mile away and would be a good goal to reach for a day hike. A long-distance biking trail system from southwest Colorado to Moab, Utah traverses Paradox Valley.
-
Petroglyph Viewing
About ten miles away are some very beautiful Anasazi petroglyph carvings. Access to the nicest display requires some moderate rock scrambling up a gorge.
-
Views Down on the Valley/Hang Gliding
Carpenter Ridge road provides access to the top of cliffs on the north rim of the valley for breathtaking views from above. The access road is a bit breathtaking as well, so be prepared for an interesting drive to the top.
A four-wheel/all-wheel drive or high clearance vehicle is required. Hang gliders have used these cliffs for some first-class launches.
-
Fishing/Boating
A 40-minute drive brings you to Buckeye Reservoir, an excellent fishing and boating lake. It sits among ponderosa pine at 7500’ and has picnic and campsites around its shores. It is refreshing on a hot summer day to visit Buckeye and enjoy a cooler alpine setting.
-
Exploring
The old Cashin Mine in La Sal Creek Canyon is a nice area to drive to, explore, and hike around.
-
River Canyon Hike
The Dolores Canyon, south of Bedrock, provides a several-hour hike to the confluence of La Sal Creek with the Dolores River.
-
Ski Area Visits
The Telluride ski area is a 1 to 3/4-hour drive to the south. This old mining town resurrected into a popular, upscale resort and the ski area is worth the drive to see its setting in midst of the majestic San Juan Mountains.
It hosts many festivals (bluegrass, film, mushroom, jazz, et al.) so a visit to one of these could be combined with your stay at the Paradox B&B.
-
Moab/Arches National Park Visit
World-renowned mountain biking trails that are but an hour’s drive away in the Moab, UT area. While there, drop by Arches National Park to view some of the best examples of natural stone arches or canoe/raft down the Colorado River, which passes through town.
